Course Description

LB 601/602/603 – English for the Visitor Industry: Parts 1, 2 & 3
6 hours each

This program teaches basic English grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and intonation as well as industry concepts necessary for visitor industry employees to effectively communicate with and serve their guests.

Course content includes common phrases and situation-based role-playing practice in various areas of the industry including:
• Food and Beverage
• Hospitality
• Retail
• Transportation

LB 711/712/713 – Japanese for the Visitor Industry: Parts 1, 2 & 3

Full Course: 18 hours (6 hours each section)

These courses provide attendees with practical, core phrases and vocabulary to effectively serve guests from Japan. Filled with exercises and practice both in and out of class, these courses maximize time, resources and technology to speed up the learning process. In addition to class instruction, attendees will receive language reference cards to use on the job, access to online recordings of all core phrases and conversations in the textbook, as well as other online resources. Participants will gain proficiency in various topics and situations including:

• Correct pronunciation
• Proper etiquette
• Greetings and Goodbyes
• Asking and Answering Questions
• Numbers, Money and Counting Objects
• Describing Food and Merchandise
• Apologizing and Politely Refusing
• Directions

These courses are designed to teach set phrases and conversations which employees are likely to encounter in the visitor industry. Although some grammar and vocabulary is included, learning the language fluently is not the goal. By the end of the courses, employees will be able to serve their customers using the target language in a variety of situations and will have the foundation to build upon their skills in the future.

LB 721/722/723 – Keigo Honorific Japanese: Parts 1,2 & 3

3 hours each

When Japanese visitors come to Hawaiʻi, they will inevitably encounter many Japanese speaking employees and will expect the same level of customer service that they receive in Japan. This course not only covers polite Japanese language, but includes all of the customer service concepts and proper etiquette required to effectively serve Japanese guests. In order to maintain service standards, participants will learn the same phrases, cultural practices and etiquette taught to new service employees in Japan. This course is appropriate for native Japanese speakers as well as anyone with advanced spoken Japanese language proficiency. Topics covered include:

• Proper Keigo Japanese – 4 different types
• Keigo for Internal and External Purposes
• Japanese Customer Service Concepts
• Dealing with Difficult or Unhappy Customers
• Proper Japanese Customer Service Etiquette
• Business Writing

LB 714, 715, 716 – Japanese Practicum
LB 734, 735, 736 – Korean Practicum

Full Course: 18 hours (6 hours each section)

These courses reinforce the topics covered in the previous 3 courses and provides students with ample opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in practice through various role playing, paired practice, and other exercises. In addition, basic grammar and new vocabulary is introduced to further solidify students’ understanding and ability to use the language every day in their workplaces.
Curriculum includes:

– Paired practice of phrases and conversations
– Exercises and activities designed to reinforce understanding and usage of the language
– Basic grammar: verb tenses and conjugation, adjective types, sentence structure
– New relevant vocabulary
